The "Office of K-N-O-W" Philosophy
A major shift in modern risk management is moving away from being seen as a restrictive barrier. Davis emphasizes that risk management must transition from being an "office of no" to an "office of k-n-o-w".
"It's a risk manager's responsibility to help their colleagues get to the yes," Davis asserts. "And so in order to do that, you need information whether that's to keep an educational mission... That is supporting decisions in itself and not just an operational function. It's an enablement."
Measuring Success Through Proactive Engagement
Rather than relying solely on traditional metrics like reduced claims or fewer incidents, Davis points to proactive outreach as the ultimate indicator of momentum. Success occurs when stakeholders actively seek out risk managers early in the planning process.
"They're calling you in because you make the entire environment secure," Davis explains. "It's not an afterthought. It's a forethought." Bringing risk teams into conversations upfront allows institutions to solve problems while ensuring core missions remain fully protected.
Differentiating Risk Through Storytelling
In a tight insurance market, standing out from standard PDF applications is critical for educational institutions and businesses alike. Davis highlights that the most effective organizations leverage storytelling to showcase their unique risk profiles.
"We want your risk to stand out alone, and the best way to do it is actually your storytelling," says Davis. Demonstrating active board engagement, cross-functional alignment, and clear post-incident mitigation strategies proves to underwriters that an organization is actively managing its risk exposure.
Advice for Risk Professionals: Build the Huddle
For risk leaders seeking to maximize their impact, Davis advises building strong collaborative relationships across leadership, legal, and operational teams. By involving the right stakeholders and maintaining open channels of communication, risk managers can safely guide their organizations through complex operational headwinds.
"No one regrets over-communication," Davis notes. "Thinking about who needs to be there, how you're communicating is usually gonna solve 90% of your problems just by having the right people in the room."
